Chapter 14
Peyton
“You want me to do what?” Peyton gaped at Will over the five-gallon bucket of paint between them. “Of all the moronic, harebrained—”
“But it’s not,” he said. “It will work.”
“Let me get this straight. You’re too scared to talk straight with your ex, so you want us to put on a fake couple performance at a fancy restaurant and that will somehow convince her to leave you alone?”
“Bianca has to believe I’m so far gone on you that she’ll only humiliate herself if she tries to compete. I did tell her straight to her face that she and I will never get back together again, but so long as she thinks I’m available, she’ll believe she has a chance. But she would never compete with another woman if she thinks she’ll lose. So she has to believe she will.”
Peyton turned back to the wall of the Wayfarer. Matt was up working on the beach house roof, so she’d come over to help Will do some of the exterior painting for Mr. Cecil. On her bike ride that morning, Peyton had seen Bianca stripping down to her bikini at her cozy breakfast picnic when Peyton was coming home from a bike ride that morning. She’d kind of expected Will to say he was taking Bianca back after that, so she supposed this was a marginal improvement.
A very marginal improvement.
She slapped a dab of paint on the wall and let some of it splatter on Will. “Didn’t you already tell her we’re supposedly together? She didn’t believe you. How will this dinner change anything?”
“You have to understand, to Bianca, appearances are everything. She thinks I’ve settled for a relationship with you because it’s easy. We have to give the illusion of the kind of mad, twitterpated love that her sense of drama requires.”
“I sort of want to kill you,” Peyton said gloomily.
“Oh, come on. It’s not as bad as all that. Just one more go, and I’ll be rid of her forever.”
She painted six feet of wall before she sighed and asked, “What’s the plan?”
“Part of the problem is Bianca thinks she understands British society and my life there so well that I couldn’t possibly be serious about an American. So how do you feel about pretending you’re as pretentious and highbrow as my upper-class London friends, so she believes it’s part of why I’m with you? And also acting . . . how do you Yanks say it? ‘Into’ me?”
“Will . . .”
“Think of it as a permanent Bianca removal.”
She dropped her paint brush to the drop cloth. It was hilarious to her that he thought she needed to “pretend” to understand navigating high society. There were mysteries yet between them, it would seem. She was careful not to let any of her amusement show on her face. It would serve him right. “I guess I can muddle along. Maybe watch those old Princess Diaries movies where Anne Hathaway’s character goes through royal etiquette training?”
“Er, that’s not really—”
“Fine. I’ll do it.
